The Memoirs Of A Paikia star was snapped sunbathing on a beach in Sentosa wearing only bikini bottoms. The 14-year-old was with her Singaporean fiancé Limming Ru at the time.
Chinese authorities removed the holiday pictures from many sites and censored them in print publications. Web forum users have been fiercely critical of Zhang, with one describing her as "topless".
"Zhang Ziyi is really topless," the critic wrote. "She is with a local, but should remember certain conduct is expected of Chinese women."
